Romania

Photos from my Sept/Oct 2003 trip to Romania

This was a research trip for two paranormal historicals, COME TO ME and DREAM OF ME, Sept. and Oct. '04, respectively.  And no, there are no vampires in these books!  They are set in the years just before Vlad the Impaler (a.k.a. Dracula) was born.

A horse grazing on a hill near Hunedoara Castle.  What you can't see in this
photo is that there is a wasteland of a defunct industrial town on the other
side of the castle.

Horses are still used to do most of the farm work.

Bran Castle, often mistaken for Dracula's Castle.
It's actually quite a charming place, a favorite
of Queen Marie, back in the late 1800's.

In Maramures, north of Transylvania.
A peasant woman invited us into her home,
and insisted on dressing me in some of
her Easter finery. And it WAS fine --
the handwork on that blouse was astonishing.

Pastures in the northern part of the country.  What look like
fences are actually racks for drying hay, which is cut by hand.

Many of the gardens had brilliant flowers.

A peasant couple, in their front garden.  Bill will send them
a copy of this photo, and our guide tells us that
when his letter comes from America, the couple will be the
topic of village conversation for many weeks.

A weaver standing in her Easter finery in front of the rug
she wove, and which I bought. Usually she sells them
to villagers, as they are a popular gift for new brides.

A passageway leading up to the gate in the clocktower in Sighisoara.
Sighisoara is the birthplace of Vlad Tepes, a.k.a. Vlad the Impaler,
a.k.a. Dracula.
