Lisa Cach is a newer author about whom I've heard very good things, but I hadn't had a chance to read anything by her yet. So I dove eagerly into her Puddings, Pastries, and Thou, and wasn't a bit disappointed. Vivian Ambrose is one of those unfortunate women fated to be passed around to distant relatives and used as a governess or companion until her marriageability is completely gone. Her previous mean and senile charge having finally died, Vivian has just been passed on to another set of cousins, the Twitchen family. They are kinder than the other cousins, hoping to marry Vivian off to someone suitable, preferably quickly so as not to interfere with their daughter Penelope's Season. In the round of Christmas entertainments, Vivian makes the acquaintance of Richard Brent, who is considered most unsuitable for a variety of reasons. He delights in feeding her (the other relatives had kept her on short rations, and her growling stomach is practically a character in its own right). He enjoys awakening her other appetites as well; a scene in which a glove is the only piece of clothing removed had me quite overheated. The story has everything - believable characters with good chemistry, humor, and moments that are genuinely touching. Grade: A

"Leisure has two valuable assets in (Ms. Cach and Ms. Dain), and I hope that it knows that and will do something to keep these two authors in the business. In the meantime, hey, I'm nuts to pay $16.00 for this book, but with Lisa Cach and Claudia Dain's stories, I don't think I'll be regretting the money spent. A very good two out of four is very good indeed.
